On the day after the test or market launch, it is always worth taking a look at availability and price. The starting price of 739 euros can be confirmed in any case after a look into the PCGH price comparison. In the corresponding „Geforce RTX 2080 S“ category there is an offer with 731 Euro, otherwise it starts at 739 Euro. In total, there are currently 31 listed graphics cards. In addition to the less complex custom designs, there are also higher quality products ranging from 780 to 950 euros. The GPU boost then goes beyond the standard values of 1.815 MHz and approaches 1.900 MHz. With linear scaling, this would correspond to up to 5 percent more raw power. The general availability of the new cards with RTX 2080S is currently still modest.
With the standard 2080 cards without S, which are slowly phased out, the offers start at around 600 Euros. In view of the calculable additional performance through the super versions, the saving of over 100 euros is definitely worth considering.
The Geforce RTX 2080 Super is the last update of the Turing graphics card lineup for the time being. The model takes over the legacy of the RTX 2080, which was only launched in September 2018; the latter is no longer produced and is therefore gradually disappearing from the market. Already on July 9, Nvidia sent the two upgraded Turing graphics cards RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super (PCGH test) on sale to have answers to the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT (PCGH test).
As a high-end graphics card, the RTX 2080 Super serves a different clientele. It is said to be faster than the old Pascal top model Titan Xp, at a starting price of 739 euros (699 US dollars). It is therefore another graphics card with which Nvidia competes exclusively against itself. AMDs Radeon VII only ranks slightly lower in price, but in most games it duels with the RTX 2070 (Super). The pressure in the high-end range is therefore limited. What the Geforce RTX 2080 Super has to offer under these conditions, we clarify in the benchmark test of the new Nvidia graphics card.
Geforce RTX 2080 Super under test: Specifications
Like all Geforce RTX graphics cards, the RTX 2080 Super is also available as a Founders Edition (FE) reference design. Nvidias decision to equip the first Turing FE cards with 90 MHz overclocking was controversially discussed – apparently so „No Super Founders Edition is factory overclocked“ that the Californians are now consistently rowing back: No Super Founders Edition is factory overclocked. What they have left is high-quality, high-performance circuit board and cooler equipment. Thus the Founders editions of the RTX Super cards do not record the absolute minimum performance, but values that the Nvidia board partners can easily exceed with factory overclocked models. The starting price is officially 739 Euro, whereby we assume that beginner versions of the RTX 2080 Super will soon fall under this brand and that only the lavishly equipped models will rank around 800 Euro. The Geforce RTX 2080 Super is the first gaming graphics card to be equipped with a fully active TU104 processor. It listens to the TU104-450 GPU assembly (still in A1 revision), offers 3,072 FP32 and INT32 ALUs each as well as a 256-bit interface to the memory. The RTX 2080, which was launched 10 months ago, still has to make do with a trimmed chip, it lacks two shader multiprocessors (2,944 ALUs) – in contrast to the Quadro RTX 5000, the professional accelerator has been equipped with fully active TU104 chips since the beginning of Turing production. The meanwhile mature production with less partially defective chips allows Nvidia to take this step. GPUs that fail at this hurdle are now being used on the RTX 2070 Super.
With 3,072 of the FP32 ALUs that are decisive for games, the new Geforce RTX 2080 Super does not pose a threat to the RTX 2080 Ti. The latter has 4,352 of these calculators, but a lower clock rate for energy reasons. The latter is higher with the RTX 2080 Super than with all other RTX graphics cards: 1.650 MHz at least (base clock), while the typical GPU boost is officially 1.815 MHz. With the latter frequency, the graphics card can handle more than 11 Tera-FLOPS of computing power with simple accuracy (FP32/SP), outperforming the (factory overclocked) RTX 2080 Founders Edition by 5.2 percent (+4.3 percent due to the arithmetic units alone). As with the previous Super Refreshes, the improvement is not for nothing, power consumption also increases, from 225 to 250 watts (+11 percent). All this is basically nothing new, highly bred variants of the old RTX 2080 achieve the raw power and power consumption of the RTX 2080 Super.
